Powdersville High School
Carolina High School & Academy
Region W for Varsity Football! Congratulations to Powdersville Varsity Football on their 56-0 victory at Carolina Friday, September 29, 2017. Patriots scored EIGHT touchdowns in the first half. The clock ran continuously after the break, which put a damper on the offense for both teams for the remainder of the game.
Senior quarterback Keith Becknell capped the Patriots’ first drive with a 42-yard pass to senior Jordan Meekins. Two minutes later, junior Tay Cureton ran a similar 36-yard combination for a second Patriot visit to the end zone. With 6:56 remaining in the period, senior EJ Humphrey finished a Patriot drive with a three-yard rush through the middle. Less than two minutes later, senior Jake Elsman picked up a Trojan fumble and ran 36 yards to score a TD for the Patriot defense. Junior Collin Beck added the PAT each time, and Patriots led 28-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Becknell opened the second quarter with a pass over the middle to Humphrey. Humphrey pivoted away and found a clear path for the rest of the 41 yards to the end zone. In the next series, Patriot defense forced the Trojans to turn over on downs. With 11:46 remaining in the half, Powdersville’s O-line made a huge hole for the truck-like Humphrey to drive thru 28 yards on his third trek to the end zone. Junior Sam McConnell recovered a Trojan fumble on the 15 to give the ball back to Patriot offense. With 5:24 remaining, Humphrey ran the final five yards around the end to rack up his fourth TD of the night. Patriot defense pushed Carolina back after the kickoff and senior Collin Baier fell on a Trojan fumble in the end zone for the Patriot defense’ second touchdown. Beck nailed the extra point after each TD, and Patriots led 56-0 at the half.
Patriots received the kickoff in the second half. The clock ran continuously, and sophomore quarterback Brian Lowry chewed up over eight minutes of clock time on a drive than took the Patriots to the 35-yard line. Carolina maintained possession for the next six minutes of play to their 24-yard line. Patriots and Trojans traded possession of the ball one more time before time expired.
Offensively, Becknell completed 8 of 13 passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns. Humphrey contributed 132 yards (71 rushing and 61 receiving). Lowry added 36 yards rushing on five carries. Other top receivers included Meekins for 52 yards, senior Blake Durham for 45, and Cureton for 36. Beck kicked eight-for-eight PAT’s. Defensively, senior Gavin Agin picked off an interception; and McConnell, Elsman, Baier, and senior Quenton Brown recovered fumbles.
Patriots’ overall record improves to 4-2. Powdersville hosts Emerald for a region game Friday, October 6, at 7:30 pm. Keep up the great work, Patriots! #OneTeamOneDream #GoPatriots!!
