Two and a half minutes into the first quarter, Emerald got on the board with a 93-yard TD run. Before the period was over, Patriots’ senior quarterback Keith Becknell found senior EJ Humphrey near the sideline. Humphrey pivoted inside, caught the ball, and escaped his defender for a 64-yard run to the goal. Junior Collin Beck’s kick was good, and Patriots tied the score 7-7.
Patriots drove downfield in the second quarter to the 19. On fourth-and-five, Becknell high-stepped thru defenders to guarantee a first down, then continued his ballet-like moves to the end zone for six points. Beck added the PAT to give the Patriots a 14-7 lead. Emerald responded with two touchdowns before the break to take a 21-14 lead at the half.
Emerald extended their lead 28-14 five minutes into the third period with a 32-yard touchdown run. Two minutes later, senior Gavin Agin recovered a Viking fumble, which sparked the Patriots on a 67-yard drive over the next three minutes. Humphrey capped the drive with a leap at the goal marker to snag Becknell’s 20-yard pass for a touchdown. Beck nailed the uprights and Patriots narrowed the gap to 28-21, ending the third quarter within one touchdown.
In the fourth quarter, Emerald amped their running game into overdrive, scoring three unanswered touchdowns for a final score of 49-21.
Becknell completed 13 of 38 passes for 190 yards and added 50 yards rushing. His 240 total yards included two touchdowns in the air and another one rushing. Humphrey contributed 181 yards (111 receiving and 64 rushing). Senior Jordan Meekins had 38 yards receiving, and Junior Tay Cureton added 31. Defensively, Agin recovered a fumble and sophomore Connor Graham notched a QB sack. For the kicking game, Beck was three-for-three on PATs.
