Powdersville Patriots took the field Friday night in the second part of a home and away series versus the Palmetto Mustangs.
The Patriots took the first leg in convincing fashion last Tuesday with a 6-0 victory in Powdersville.
While the Mustangs may have been seeking retribution, those aspirations were trampled on early in the first half, when Senior Ivan Garza played a deceptive back heel down the left touchline to Sophomore Cannon Barbary who was overlapping on the play. Barbary crossed the ball, with an out-swinging left footed cross, finding Senior Carson Brannon deep inside the penalty area. Brannon settled the aerial pass before a nice finish inside the Palmetto goal to register Powdersville’s first of the night.
In the 18th minute the Patriots added to their lead when Sophomore midfielder Trevor Pike, pounced on an errant clearing attempt, just inside the penalty area and cleverly placed a right footed one-timer to the right of Palmetto keeper and into the net. The goal doubled the Patriots lead to 2-0.
In the 25th minute, Senior Caden Beck, whipped in a long thrown-in inside the penalty area. The throw found the head of Freshman Steve Ouattara who accurately redirected the long throw into the upper ninety for the Patriots third goal of the night.
Halftime: Patriots 3 Mustangs 0
In the 50th minute, an errant back pass enabled the Mustangs to pony up with a goal of their own, narrowing the margin to 3-1.
However, in the 57th minute, Junior Thomas Drayton, sent a 30 yard aerial bomb into the space behind the defenders. Despite starting his run ten yards behind, Ouattara sped past the last offender and with great dexterity chipped the ball over a sprawling mustang goalkeeper who came out to challenge a bit late.
In the 72nd minute the Patriots struck again when Junior Wesley Bigsbee poked a rebound across the goal line after a corner kick.
The Patriots added one more in extra time on a goal by Junior Kevin Ream. Ream, after receiving a pass from Beck, struck a 30 yard shot that managed its way through the Mustang keeper’s five hole.
